Designer biography:
Yier is an early-career silversmith and is currently participating in a cohort study at Bishopsland Educational Trust. Her work explores narrative storytelling in jewellery, merging traditional craftsmanship, such as filigree inlay, with a reflective and research-driven approach. My educational background has been pivotal in shaping my practice. My BA Architecture studies at Central Saint Martins have shaped the way I understand structure, material, and the relationship between the public and space, which I transfer to jewellery design and making in my later studies. During my MA at the RCA, I developed a foundation in silversmithing and translated my personal growth story into jewellery. Further training at Bishopsland has strengthened my hand skills and deepened my commitment to a craft-based practice.
Collection concept:
This practice investigates the use of traditional filigree inlay techniques in various scales to explore different forms of narrative jewellery, which is deeply rooted in personal experience and feelings. Also, seeking to expand the boundaries of this traditional craft. Influenced by my architecture background, I am attracted to the relationships among body and nature, space and structure, and the materials. Thinking through making, emotional tensions, compressions, and connections are articulated by the space created by the construction and deconstruction of material. For example, the equilibrium and calm can be shown by orderly woven patterns; the emotional conflict can also be displayed as the moment when strong wind blows the grass through the interplay of folded metal and fine filigree wire inlay.
