Rose Luker - France/Australia
Rose Luker
Designer biography:
An Australian artisan jeweller & passionate collector of vintage designer clothes, Rose Luker lives & works in France and Australia. Her work is inspired by things around her - from the wild untamed beauty of nature, to the refinement of haute couture, and the rigour of mid-century Scandinavian design. She often explores/ transgresses the boundary between ‘precious’ and ‘mass produced’, mixing precious metals & stones with the raw materials of everyday life - brass, copper, crystal, cement & resin. Her work is bold & sculptural: simultaneously wild & refined, hard & soft, common & precious, fashion & art: it often teeters on the edge of ‘too much’, while remaining grounded in the ‘wearable’. Ms. Luker has exhibited in Sydney, Paris, New York, Lausanne Switzerland, Palermo Italy, Stockholm Sweden, and Brussels, Belgium.
Collection concept:
Rose Luker’s ‘ Infinity’ collection, hand made in pure silver, began as an exploration of movement, repetition & circularity, and in particular, the inevitable cycles of nature: the endless parade of the seasons, evolution, birth, life & death. In this new work, a single folded twisted component is repeated, again & again, to create a bold collar/neckpiece, cuff, ring and a pendant – with an earring in design stage. The series is essentially about form, stripped back to its essence: devoid of additional adornment or precious stones, the only ‘embellishment’ being texture and the light that emanates from the metal itself. It is, in part, inspired by the work of legendary Nordic/Scandi silversmiths in the period after WW2, when ‘Scandinavian Modern’ - a fresh new design aesthetic - was born.
