Designer biography:

Huiyu Chiu is a Taiwanese artist based in France, working within the field of contemporary jewelry, drawing on the language and sensibility of traditional East Asian painting. Trained in fine arts before specializing in contemporary jewelry, she brings together a painterly sensibility with the material awareness and craftsmanship rooted in metalsmithing. Her earliest encounter with art began in childhood through traditional East Asian painting, which she learned from her mother, an amateur artist. This early experience formed her sensitivity to gesture, rhythm, and attentive observation of nature, which continues to resonate in her work today.  Since moving to the French countryside in 2016, her work has increasingly drawn inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Returning to the meditative process of painting, it has become the most intimate way for her to capture the subtle beauty of nature. Working with silk, ink, mineral pigments, and metal, she approaches painting as a slow material process, developing what she describes as “growing images.” Through layered gestures and subtle accumulations of color, forms gradually emerge over time, reflecting natural cycles of germination, growth, blooming, fading, and renewal. These processes relate to her ongoing inquiry into presence and absence, and into what is fleeting and what persists over time.  Painting and jewelry remain closely connected within her practice. Her training as a metalsmith brings careful attention to scale, detail, and materials, shaping the way images take form. Moving between object and image, her work reflects an ongoing exploration of transformation, material presence, and the quiet rhythms of the living world.

Collection concept:

The Still Life series reflects a quiet paradox between stillness and living presence: while the image appears still, it seems to continue growing through the accumulation of material and time.

Bringing together the material awareness of metalsmithing and the meditative spirit of traditional East Asian painting, Huiyu Chiu allows images to unfold gradually rather than directly depicting nature.  Through repeated gestures and subtle shifts in the surface, forms slowly emerge, transform, and fade, echoing the gentle cycles of natural growth. The image appears quiet and still, yet continues to grow.
