Katya Demidova - SOMNILOQUY - Mexico
SOMNILOQUY
Designer biography:
Katya Demidova was born in 1983, Moscow, Russia. She currently lives and works in México. Growing up in an artistic family encouraged Katya to engage with arts and crafts from a young age. In 2005 she moved to London after completing her degree in linguistics at Moscow University of Foreign Languages. She took a postgraduate degree in Fine Art from Byam Shaw School of Art /University of the Arts London/ where she explored various forms of art such as performance and installation that allowed her to expand her creative skills. However, photography remained her main field of interest. Being attracted by documentary photography and storytelling, she continued her journey at the University of Westminster undertaking a Master´s degree in photojournalism. Through the years Katya has developed strong manual skills and an eye for details and design that lead her to México, which has been her home base since 2015. In her newly adopted country she has started to explore its rich traditions and ancestral techniques. Two years later on the Caribbean coast of Tulum SOMNILOQUY was born. As a leap of faith her life long hobby has become a jewelry brand. Through creating designs with beads she continues to fulfill her fascination with color and geometrical forms, that she has been translating through photography earlier. With SOMNILOQUY designs the artist aspires to adorn and empower people who wear them.
Collection concept:
SOMNILOQUY is a space where ancestral techniques and contemporary design integrate. It is a continuous exploration of shapes and colors as well as tactile experience. The curiosity of the creative process never seems to fade as with every new design I embark on a “mind to hands” journey - from the idea to an actual wearable object. All the pieces are unique or made in limited editions. The HOOP necklace has been an initial seed of the whole project back in 2014 way before I started working with beads and silver. The HOOP has lived through many transformations: different sizes, fillers and colors. It is by far my favorite design to make as it allows me full freedom with no preconceived idea or sketch to follow. Each piece is unique and a pure reflection of a current mood and muse.
