Robin Thuemler
Designer biography:
Robin Thuemler is an Auckland-based designer and self-taught jeweller with a background in engineering. His work explores the intersection of mechanical structure, material tension, and contemporary jewellery. Drawing on industrial forms, technical processes, and found objects, he creates pieces that question conventional ideas of value, permanence, and adornment. Through experimentation with unconventional materials, hidden mechanisms, and structural assembly, his practice investigates how objects associated with utility or force can be transformed into jewellery that invites reflection and reinterpretation.
Collection concept:
This collection explores the tension between value, violence, and containment. Forms associated with ammunition and mechanical restraint are transformed into jewellery objects that trap, fragment, or destabilise gemstones. Instead of diamonds, the work uses moissanite—an industrially grown material whose brilliance rivals traditional luxury stones. Gems appear captive, fractured, or suspended within structures derived from cartridges, springs, and perforated shells. Through hidden inscriptions, moving stones, and fractured gems, the pieces question how value is constructed and how materials associated with conflict can be reinterpreted as objects of reflection and adornment.
