Designer biography:
Laura Sima is an artist and jewelry designer with interdisciplinary work practices between objects and graphic arts. Currently, she is undergoing a professional doctorate programme at National University of Arts, Bucharest. She also has a background in Social Communication and holds a Ph.D. in Philology from the University of Bucharest, CESI. The artist had solo shows with her graphic works – Locus Sigilli, at Celula de Artă Gallery and Fil d’Or, at pop-up Celula at Kulterra Gallery. She attended courses at Assamblage School of Contemporary Jewelry, and workshops led by Gisbert Stach, Melanie Isverding, and Philip Sajet. Laura Sima has exhibited jewellery pieces at Milano Jewelry Week, SCAF Sibiu, Blue Biennale Brașov, Romanian Jewelry Week.
Collection concept:
In this series, Laura Sima plays with signs whose meanings are suspended, waiting for a partner. The references she makes are subtle, freezing in time a piece of decorative element and letting the viewer/wearer relate with it in a personal manner. The pendants are reminiscent of a time standing still and celebrate traditional Romanian clothes and jewelry. The artist sets in vintage pocket cases hand embroidered pieces of fabrics, decorated with silver and gold threads and sequins. Order, colors, different materials, symbols encapsulated in ancestral geometries delight the eye and the mind. The strings, made of vintage glass, pearls, or precious stones, are a reminder of the strands of jewelry worn by women on special occasions.
