Immersion I

Ting-Chun, Chen is an art jeweller based in Hsinchu, Taiwan. My works are mostly created with metal, using intuition and repeated labor to convey personal surroundings and sentiments. The city I grew up in is located near the coast, and I often listen and watch the repeating waves; this memory has turned into a source of creativity. I repeatedly saw and cut on the metal plates, memories flowing from the body through the hands. The metal plates create a rhythm with the sawing and cutting, gradually forming shapes of sea creatures. My life shapes my work.

I repeated the actions of “folding, rolling, opening and closing” on the metal plate, resembling animals’ breathing or heart beating, trying to look for life through rhythm. From inorganic to organic, the prefabricated metal plate represents my creative process, which begins from the blank and gradually finds my own face and identity. I used crustacean as imagery for its long surviving history, reminding us that revolution is slow, and individual should free oneself from self-threatening his or her normal life journey.
