Biography:

Built around collections with very different universes, the Belgian brand Misogyne constantly challenges the very notions of jewelry and preciosity, while offering a non-binary and ethical creation.

Nevertheless, two main ranges emerge in what seems to be an experimental research: a contemporary limited edition collection alongside custom-made jewelry creations for private clients.

The contemporary collections developed are composed of unique pieces gathered around the same material. However, the different universes presented share a common minimalist aesthetic. Thus, this choice of simplicity focused on form confers an elegant guideline spreading throughout the work of Misogyne. It would be a betrayal of the brand's creator, Caroline Purgal, not to mention her taste for paradox and her love of Belgian-style surrealism -that can be found occasionally in what seems to be a growing desire to unravel the codes of jewelry aesthetics to appropriate them!

Collection concept: FISH LEATHER

Used for centuries, fish leather is part of a tradition of gesture. The realization of these pieces was initiated following the granting of a Design Award for the creation of prototypes valuing a noble material, whose resources come from local and organic breeding. The project started from the difficulty the Belgian jewelry industry faces to explore new materials. Therefore, I wanted to open a new field of possibilities by using this organic resource which, once worked under the right conditions, can offer many aesthetic advantages similar to those of enamel.

When the idea of this project emerged in my head, I quickly realized that I wanted to shed light on the material by working it in organic forms. In this collection, the jewels value a sober aesthetic that unfolds in as many small parcels that could evoke the graphic structure of the fish scale. The colors obtained by a process of vegetable tanning are reinforced by the resin - which comes to vitrify the skin and initiates a dialogue with the aspect of the metal. The viewer's gaze is, thu, invited to dive into these parcels of colors to analyze their structure.
