Spot the Designer - Lauriane Sémat/ France

What did you want to be when you were a child?

I don't remember what I wanted to be as a child, but I know that what I'm doing today nourishes the child inside me.

When have you started creating jewelry? How did this passion come about?

I started jewelry in 2011, first I was a painter and I’ve always worked with the female body. I approached jewelry as a sculpture to wear. It is the same creative process for me to make a painting or work on metal.

What was your first project or significant piece for you and from what point of view?

Oh, the first significant piece was probably the faces brooches that create my signature. They are my personal sweet monsters.

How do you charge your batteries? What other passions and creative interests do you have?

Working on my workshop is like meditation for me. So I think I charge my batteries like this.

What does the connection between manufacturing tradition and contemporary design mean to you?

I think contemporary design feeds on what it finds around it, so it's kind of a continuation of traditional jewelry work.

Is there a self-portrait piece that speaks most about you?

The pieces that I have been wearing for years are the half moons. I created them for me and they are completely unique pieces that I have never made identically. They are part of my personality.

Which material have you not yet used is a temptation and a challenge for you?

Porcelain.

How was the pandemic period for you as a jewelry designer?

It was a time of great reflection on the changes I wanted to give to my work, to my workshop. Many beautiful things have come out of this period.

How do you see the future of contemporary jewelry?

I hope for a curious future, closely linked with art.
